ABSTRACT
Although ultrasound imaging has been widely used clinically, the current technology is known to have systemic limitations. Specifically, the use of ultrasound in measuring blood flow is well acknowledged to lack visual intuitiveness and is often erroneous. New technologies are needed to more effectively diagnose a variety of medical problems that the aging population is prone to, such as atherosclerosis. Extending beyond our recent advances in ultrasound vector flow imaging technology, this presentation will present the design of a new quantitative imaging framework for wall shear stress mapping. We will also discuss Doppler ultrasound bandwidth imaging, a new tool that we have devised to track flow turbulence. With these imaging innovations, it becomes possible to track complex cardiovascular flow phenomena and, in turn, derive hemodynamic biomarkers that are important to the monitoring of atherosclerosis and cardiac anomalies.
