Dr. Jiaen Liu is a tenure-track Assistant Professor and endowed Texas Instrument Scholar in the Advanced Imaging Research Center at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, USA. He is the director of the Lab of Biomedical Imaging Research (BiMIR). The focus of BiMIR includes quantitative high-resolution ultrahigh field MRI (in vivo histology), novel methods for fast mesoscale functional MRI and in vivo measurement of tissue-CSF exchange. He was awarded the ISMRM Junior Fellow for his PhD thesis on MRI-based electrical properties tomography. He obtained his PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Master and Bachelor’s degrees at Tsinghua University. He received his postdoc training in the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke in Bethesda, Maryland, USA.
Abstract
High resolution quantitative MRI can be used to probe tissue properties from susceptibility, myelin concentration and hemodynamics to water permeability across biological barriers. From the mesoscale (~500 micron) to the classical macroscale (several mm) MRI resolutions, these properties can be used to provide early diagnostic information in neurodegeneration, inflammation and psychiatric diseases. In this talk, I will introduce our motion robust mesoscale susceptibility-based quantitative MRI methods and clinical applications in multiple sclerosis. I will also talk about our recent work in the measurement of tissue-CSF exchange using selective tissue spin labeling and CSF spin readout.
